About the NED roles

Non-Executive Director (relevant to all NEDs)

Location: Accessible to Norwich

Remuneration: Directors do not receive remuneration, but reasonable expenses for attending will be paid

Time Commitment:

  • Up to 6 two-hour long full board meetings per annum;
  • Attending and helping to host Norwich Theatre events and other engagements from time to time;
  • Some additional time to study papers and give ad hoc support to the Executive Team as necessary.

Meetings generally take place in-person at a Norwich Theatre venue in Norwich. Potential reasonable adjustments will be discussed with successful candidates during the appointment process.

Term of Appointment: Directors are appointed for a period of 3 years and are expected to serve a maximum of 2 terms of office (totalling 6 years).

Role description

To live out the values of the organisation by:

  • attending meetings regularly and being actively involved in decision making;
  • acting as an advocate for the work of the Services Board by forging and maintaining links outside the organisation;
  • engaging willingly and actively with Norwich Theatre’s programme, employees and activities;
  • all of our Non-Executives are required to understand and embrace the seven Nolan Principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership

NED responsibilities

  • Contribute actively to the Services Board, providing strategic direction and ensuring its good governance.
  • Actively engage in discussions that support the development of strategies relating to the work of Norwich Theatre’s commercial subsidiary.
  • To ensure scrutiny and challenge specific and relevant to the work of the Services Board.
  • To ensure that Norwich Theatre Services Board acts in compliance with company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
  • To ensure that Norwich Theatre Services Board pursues a strategy that wholly supports the furtherance of the charitable objects of its parent chatiy, Norwich Theatre Trust.
  • To act as an ambassador for Norwich Theatre and support the Executive Team in the fulfilment of their roles on behalf of the Services Board.

Non-Executive Director 1

Role Summary:

We are looking to appoint a Non-Executive Director with a strong commercial background, ideally an experienced business leader or entrepreneur with a demonstrable track record of strategic growth and innovation. This individual will bring insight into commercial development, new income models, and entrepreneurial thinking that can support our long-term resilience and ambition. A personal connection to the arts or to Norwich/Norfolk is desirable, as is a willingness to act as a sounding board and strategic partner to the executive team.

 

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Executive-level commercial leadership experience or as a strategist in a high-growth business or entrepreneurial environment with experience in joint ventures and partnership based business growth
  • Proven ability to identify and support opportunities for income diversification, enterprise, or commercial innovation within a mission-led context
  • Strategic thinker with a growth mindset, bringing creativity, insight and pragmatism to organisational challenges and opportunities
  • Ambitious and career driven
  • Keen interest in developing Non-Executive skills
  • A personal or professional connection to Norwich or Norfolk, or a strong interest in engaging meaningfully with the region and its cultural life
  • Experience of commercial partnerships eg major procurement, legal or contract negotiations, mergers and acquisitions or investment management
  • A passion for Norwich Theatre’s work
  • Time and willingness to engage actively, including attending board meetings, representing the charity at events, and offering strategic advice as appropriate
  • Sound judgement and the ability to scrutinise, challenge and support executive leadership constructively
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative, inclusive leadership style and the time and capacity to engage actively in the role

Non-Executive Director 2

Role Summary:

We are looking to appoint a Non-Executive Director who has a background in data and insight analysis with a demonstrable background in data centric strategic decision making and risk assessment. A personal connection to the arts or to Norwich/Norfolk is desirable, as is a willingness to act as a sounding board and strategic partner to the executive team.

 

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • A data and insight analyst, either with financial, market research or other relevant specialism
  • Working in a corporate context or within the research/academic sector
  • Strategic thinker with a growth mindset, bringing creativity, insight and pragmatism to organisational challenges and opportunities.
  • A passion for Norwich Theatre’s work
  • Ambitious and career driven
  • Keen interest in developing Non-Executive skills
  • Time and willingness to engage actively, including attending board meetings, representing the charity at events, and offering strategic advice as appropriate
